Russell walks off vs Cabell Midland



FLATWOODS Russell salvaged a win from the Tri-State Softball Classic with a thriller in its final game of the weekend.

Alexis Maynard’s walk-off RBI single completed a comeback from a one-run Lady Devils deficit entering the bottom of the seventh in a 6-5 defeat of Cabell Midland on Saturday evening. Maynard’s knock plated Sara Hieneman, who had just tied the game with an RBI.

Maynard, Makayla Fraley and Hieneman each drove in two runs. Fraley and Hieneman hit back-to-back homers in the fifth inning.

Hieneman went 3-for-3, while Grace Osborne and Fraley were 2-for-3.

Haven Layne picked up the victory in relief of Camryn Ratliff. Layne worked a perfect seventh inning to hold the Lady Devils’ deficit at the time to one run.

Olivia Canterbury homered twice for the Knights and drove in four runs. She took the decision in the circle.

Russell (15-5) next embarks upon a stretch of four 63rd District seeding games in 10 days, beginning with a trip to Raceland on Tuesday.

Ashland 0-2 in Showcase Saturday

ASHLAND Ashland, tri-cohost of the Tri-State Softball Showcase, dropped both of its games on Saturday, first falling to Fleming County, 101, before a three-inning 18-1 setback to Hurricane (West Virginia).

The Panthers broke open their game with six runs in the final three innings. Morgan Fern and Taylor Marshall each homered for Fleming County (7-1), which sustained its first loss of the season later in the day to Boyd County, 9-3.

Megan Claypoole recorded 16 strikeouts for the Panthers and allowed three hits. Tori Ishmael went 3-for-4, while Fern, Sidney Argo and Kennedy Perkins has two hits apiece.

Mykayla Akers was the Kittens’ pitcher of record.

Hurricane later swept to an 18-1 whitewashing of Ashland. Zoe Ingram produced one bright spot for the Kittens, homering in the second inning. Kenzi Robinson was tagged with the pitching loss.

Ashland drops to 6-11.

MOUNT STERLING The Red Devils are 12-6, good for the most wins in the 16th Region thus far, with a come-from-behind win on the road Saturday.

Nick Conley doubled twice, Casey Hensley and Austin Brinkman each recorded two hits, and Cole Cordle worked 2 2-3 innings of scoreless relief to get the decision.

Ty Eads, Devon Martin and Elijah Mohr each had two hits for Montgomery County (310). Hayden Chism took the loss.

RACELAND The Rams improved to 11-5 with a thorough thrashing of the Tartans in five innings.

Hunter Lacks hit his third home run of the season. He, Mike Bartley, Hunter Parsons and Justin Fairchild each picked up multiple hits.

Seth Mills worked three innings of one-run ball, getting the decision for Raceland.

Trey Mills, Lacks and Bartley each drove in three runs.
