EKC tennis heads to finish



MOREHEAD The Eastern Kentucky Conference tennis tournament held its first two rounds on Tuesday at Morehead State University.

East Carter’s Mason Tomaselli outlasted Rowan County’s Luke Burrows, 9-8 (8-6), in a thrilling back-and-forth match. Tomaselli won six consecutive points to emerge victorious and advance to Wednesday’s semifinals.

He was one of four East Carter representatives who advanced to Wednesday, joining Maria Hayes, Makenzie Hayes and Milena Clarke.

Maria Hayes beat West Carter’s Kimmi Hedge, 8-0, and then Kennedy Trusty (Morgan Co.), 83, to move to the semifinals.

Makenzie Hayes and Clarke fought back from a 3-1 gap to topple Lewis County’s Johnson/Cornett duo, 8-3.

Russell fared well, as expected, on Tuesday. Chandler Nguyen (boys singles), Wes Patterson and Michael Eastham (boys doubles), Hannah Blaine (girls singles) and Claudia Kendrick and Maci Ferguson (girls doubles) were all semifinalists.


Wednesday’s semifinal matchups featured the following:

•Boys singles: Ashton Whitt (Morgan Co.) vs. Mason Tomaselli (E. Carter); Braiden Thacker (Rowan Co.) vs. Chandler Nguyen (Russell).

•Boys doubles: Kidd/Barber (Rowan Co.) vs. Fannin/McCoy (W. Carter); Kemplin/Gevedon (Morgan Co.) vs. Patterson/Eastham (Russell).

•Girls singles: Maria Hayes (E. Carter) vs. Hannah Blaine (Russell); Josie Hutchinson (Raceland) vs. Ashton Jones (Morgan Co.).

•Girls doubles: Kendrick/Ferguson (Russell) vs. Kemplin/Murphy (Morgan Co.); Hayes/Clarke (E. Carter) vs. Mayse/Hammonds (Morgan Co.).


The finals were also scheduled for Wednesday.
