Sanders hits GW shot for Russell

HUNTINGTON Russell’s Lakie Sanders nailed a 15-foot baseline jumper at the buzzer to lift the Lady Devils to a 64-63 defeat of Spring Valley on Tuesday night.

Sanders, a junior, finished with a team-best 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting. She also had nine rebounds.

Rachel Michael contributed 17 points, including two long balls.

Ty Mitchell tallied six points, eight rebounds and 11 assists. Madison Darnell nearly posted a double-double as she had nine points and 11 boards.

Spring Valley was led in scoring by Madison Vaughn with 19 points.

Russell (12-6) will next travel to Rowan County on Thursday.

PAINTSVILLE Presley Chirico put in 18 points, all of which occurred over three quarters, as the Lady Tigers held off Belfry on Tuesday.

Chirico scored all six of her team’s third-quarter points to help avoid a Belfry rally.

Anna Keeton chipped in 12 points.

McKenzie Maynard had a team-best 17 points for Belfry (11-9).

Paintsville (14-6) will host Magoffin County on Friday.
