Russell rocks Valley, Belfry to 6-0 start

FLATWOODS Russell’s Haven Layne and Alexis Maynard earned pitching victories as Russell picked up a pair of wins in a triangle with Valley (Ohio) and Belfry on Saturday.

The Lady Devils toppled Valley, 9-2, before Valley beat Belfry, 4-2. Russell then blew out Belfry, 13-0, in five innings.

Against Valley, Layne struck out six batters and walked two. She improved to 4-0.

Annalee Miller, the Lady Devils’ leadoff hitter, went 4 for 4. Makayla Fraley and Ali Hartman each went 2 for 3.

Maynard, Rylie Cook and Camryn Ratliff recorded two RBIs apiece.

Maynard limited Belfry to four hits in the day’s final game. Russell, meanwhile, raked out 13 hits.

Fraley, Maynard and Krissy Hall posted two hits each.

Maynard and Hartman had three RBIs against the Lady Pirates. Madison Darnell drove in four runs.

Russell (6-0) is at South Point on Monday.

Ashland drops 3 at E-town

ELIZABETHTOWN Ashland went 03 against stiff competition over the weekend in the Big M Chevrolet Classic.

Madisonville-North Hopkins, Male and Boyle County beat the Kittens, 11-1, 11-3 and 10-4, respectively.

Makayla Akers went 2 for 4 against both Male and Boyle County. Sidney Campbell was 2 for 3 vs. Boyle County.

The Kittens managed just two hits in a five-frame loss to Madisonville- North Hopkins on Friday. The other two games took place on Saturday.

Zoe Ingram exited the Male game after being plunked in the head, but coach Scott Ingram said he thinks she will be fine. She sat out against Boyle County as a precaution.

Ashland (1-4) will host Johnson Central on Monday at 6:30 p.m.

Greenup splits two in Ohio

PORTSMOUTH Greenup County held Olentangy (Ohio) quiet until the fourth inning. Seven runs came across over the next three frames, leading to a 7-3 defeat of the Musketeers.

Kyle Gammon had a 2-for-3, tworun, one-RBI day for Greenup County, which used four different pitchers.

The Musketeers managed to take down Portsmouth, 8-3, thanks to a nice start. The Musketeers plated four in the first stanza.

Dylan Ball picked up the win while also going 3 for 4.

Isaiah Greene went 3 for 4 with two RBIs. Jaxon Keeton also had two RBIs.

Greenup County (3-2) will visit Rowan County on Wednesday.

Russell goes 1-1 at East

GRAYSON Nick Conley cranked out his second jack of the Big Jack Classic as Russell beat Fairview, 13-2, on Saturday at East Carter High School. Prestonsburg earlier beat the Red Devils, 14-3.

Conley also homered on Friday.

Russell relented seven first-inning runs on no hits against Prestonsburg. Errors and hit batsman led to the big deficit, from which Russell couldn’t recover.

Ben Thompson led the Red Devils with three hits against Fairview. Justin Manning contributed three RBIs.

Grant Wilburn, Landon Brewer, Jacob Funk and Chaz Whitt recorded two hits apiece.

Russell (5-3) is set to host Ironton on Tuesday.
