Russell Area Technology Center’s Business Law Class, taught by Melissa Wilburn, would like to thank Bruce Markusen, Manager of Digital and Outreach Learning, of the Baseball Hall of Fame & Museum in Cooperstown, NY, for his video conference with our students today!! Through the “Hardballs and Handshakes” program, students were able to talk with Mr. Markusen about the history of MLB contracts as well as how players and management organized themselves, the transition of our National Pastime from a social sport to a professional industry, and a lesson in free enterprise through the evolution of contracts and commerce.
This was a great extension to our lesson on the elements of a contract, which included a live visit from major league umpire, Greg Gibson, of Ashland, Kentucky. Some great ideas were exchanged! We are so happy to be able to provide an innovative way to learn inside the classroom with funding through G.O.A.L. and Kentucky Power with assistance from Kentucky Educational Development Corporation (KEDC).
"It was a good experience to expose me to something I may encounter in college." Mattie Colm
"It is a very informative and cool way to learn, since it is from a very famous place like the Baseball Hall of Fame." Grant Wilburn
"It was a different way to learn about different contracts. I also enjoyed having the contracts compared to professional baseball. It was very interesting and something that I was looking forward to." McKinzie Walters
