LOUISVILLE Raceland-Worthington High School academic team coach Becky Clere said students are still in disbelief about winning a state title at the Governor’s Cup State Finals.
The team came in first place in quick recall at the academic competition recently hosted in Louisville.
The state finals close the academic team season, which begins in the fall and lasts throughout January and February with district and regional meets.
“It’s very surreal. I don’t think it has sunk in yet to the kids,” said Clere, pointing out the team was up against larger schools in the state.
Also victorious was Russell High School, which took an overall first place. Russell High School academic team coach Kirk Barnett commented on the win, saying everyone is very proud of the students. He added that he also initially had a good feeling about the team. “It was a good mix of experienced students and some really good younger students. We were pretty strong in pretty much every subject area and whenever that happens, you know that it should be at least potential for a good year,” he said.
Clere said the team always felt like it had the chance to win, but was still unsure, noting it did have some weaknesses. In the quick recall competition, the team was one of 32 vying for the top spot.
“Everyone stepped up and did exactly what they needed to do to be able to win. It was just elation, it was overwhelming,” said Clere about the team’s reaction to winning.
Clere also said she was overwhelmed by the support of other local schools during the competition.
In the overall final standings, Raceland came in third. Paul G. Blazer High School placed fifth.
Barnett touched on the students’ dedication, saying they worked hard, not only in practice, but on their own.
Preparing for state finals was also no simple feat for the RWHS team. Clere said the team of 10 practices every day after school and the students also spend countless hours on their own preparing, in addition to going to competitions on the weekend. This year was the second time the team has made it to the state competition.
