Russell Middle wins 1st overall at academic meet

ASHLAND Russell Middle School took first place overall at the regional Governor’s Cup competition Saturday.

Russell also won the quick recall contest, and Ashland Middle School won in future problem solving.

In overall standings, Ashland came in second, Boyd County was third, followed by McKell in fourth place and Wurtland in fifth. McKell was second in quick recall, followed by Ashland, West Carter and Wurtland.

 Russell was second in future problem solving, Wurtland was third and West Carter was fourth.

First place winners in written assessments included Arnav Dharmagadda of Russell in mathematics and social studies, Noah Carter of Boyd County in science, Ashlee Steele of Russell in language arts, Hope Smallwood of Boyd County in arts and humanities, and Jadon Gordon of McKell in composition.

High school teams will hold their regional meet Feb. 17 at Russell High School.

Regional competition for elementaries is March 3.

Qualifying middle and high schools and students will compete at the state level March 1719 at the Galt House in Louisville.
