November 2016, Berea, KY -- Dakotah Zimmer of Flatwoods, KY recently received the 2016 Berea College Pinnacle Scholar Award of Excellence for accomplishments in the field of Service.
The Pinnacle Scholar Awards program recognizes outstanding high school seniors for their work in the fields of science, music, or service. Students are nominated by a local teacher or guidance counselor, with only 40 top students in each category selected to receive the award.
Berea College created the Pinnacle Scholar Awards to recognize students in the region who demonstrate a strong potential to exert a positive influence on the future of Appalachia. Determining this year's winners was particularly challenging due to the number and caliber of nominees. Dakotah was chosen out of hundreds of nominees from across nine different states.
Berea College, the South's first interracial and coeducational college, focuses on learning, labor, and service. Berea awards the Tuition Promise Scholarship to every admitted student. Those selected for admission demonstrate outstanding academic promise, limited economic resources, and are primarily from the Appalachian region. All students are employed on campus for 10 hours a week to earn money for their housing, meals, and books, and to gain valuable work experience. Graduates from Berea go on to distinguish themselves and the College in many fields, including science, arts, education, government, and social services.
